Job Summary

Manages and coordinates projects associated with over the road testing of railcars and railcar components through mobile data collection systems.  Manages the development and applications of remote data collection and car location monitoring.  Initiates contact with vendors to develop and install unique on-board and trackside systems and equipment to monitor car and component performance.  Interfaces with IT, Operations Strategy and Analytics department to analyze data to determine component health and performance.

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or Control Systems Engineering or equivalent and five to ten years of related experience is required
  • High level of knowledge in the area of wireless sensor nodes, sensor networks, and mechanical component measurement with electronic transducers. Knowledge of freight railroad and/or railroad components is highly desirable.
  • A medium level of understanding in solid body mechanics, wireless data transmission, and battery technology is required. Knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines is beneficial to lead development of the technology.  Current understanding of IoT and industry trends is beneficial.  Strong project leadership, action oriented personality, and electronic organization is required. 
  • A Medium level of communication, writing and leadership skills required. High level of ability using MS Office tools, project management tools, and electronic file organization is required. Prior use of data analysis tools such as Tableau, SAS, MatLab, etc are desired, but not required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of data reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Physical Job Requirements

The working environment is a mix of general office work, shop environment, and testing work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and/or risk of electric shock. Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, work in high precarious places and where there is vibration. Working environment can be loud and requires the ability to climb on and under rail cars for test setup and inspection purposes.


Frequently required to talk, hear, sit (remain stationary within work area), and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Frequently required to move about (stand, walk), climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift/transport up to 50 pounds.


Up to 25% travel is required to Company locations, railroad service yards, and vendors. Areas can have high volume of railroad traffic and requires being ambulatory and correctable hearing and visual capabilities which includes close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
